Proposal to Introduce a Tax on Sugar in the Czech Republic

This thesis focuses on the implementation of a sugar tax in the Czech Republic and evaluates the tax from the perspective of expected profitability. Attention is paid to the arguments for taxing sugar, specifically its negative impact on public health. The introduction of a sugar tax in the Czech Republic is based on the experience of selected countries, which have introduced a sugar tax. The effects and impacts of this tax have been compared and analysed. The result of the thesis is a proposal of sugar taxation under our conditions and the shortcomings occurring in the observed countries are eliminated.
Family influence on the consumption of sugary drinks by preschoolers

This work focus on the influence of the family on the consumption of sweetened beverages in preschool children. Due to the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in the population, it is necessary to find new ways to actively prevent this trend. The theoretical part of the thesis focus on the causes and effects of overweight and obesity. It analyzes uncontrollable influences, such as genetics, or racial and ethnic differences. Also influences that can be influenced, where we can include, socioeconomic status, eating habits, and the consumption of sugary drinks, physical activity, sleep, stress or family influences. The family has a great influence on the child and his life from early childhood. Positive and negative as well. Many studies have already been published, that looked at the connections between the family's socioeconomic situation, place of residence, inappropriate diet, excessive consumption of sugary drinks, little physical activity and the likelihood of becoming overweight and obese. Problems of added sugars in our population

This bachelor thesis focuses on the intake of the added sugars among the population of young adults, particularly among the adults in the group of 30 to 45 years of age. The theoretical part of this thesis provides a brief overview of the saccharides based on their chemical composition and elementary classification. The sugars and the natural as well as the synthetic sweeteners and their use in the food industry are then discussed in detail. The concepts of naturally occurring and added sugars are described including the related legislative requirements for food labeling and nutritional recommendations issued by the international and national institutions. The special attention is devoted to the role of sugars in nutrition and to the health risks arising from an excessive sugar intake. The research part of the thesis includes a survey carried out in the form of a questionnaire aiming to investigate, in particular, the consumption of the sweetened soft beverages, the fruit products and the breakfast cereals and to defend the hypothesis that the chosen group of the population consumes the added sugars in an excessive amount. Carbohydrates are an integral part of human diet. We distinguish them according to their length, usability, glycemic respond and taste. Sugars are mainly found in sweetened beverages and processed food. Consuming empty calories in the form of sugar sweetened drinks leads to the recommended daily allowance of sugars and total energy intake is being exceeded. It has negative impact on risk of civilization diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dental carries and depression. Limiting the intake of sweetened beverages and industrial processed foods, principles of healthy diet and enough of exercise helps to prevent these diseases.
